1 Corinthians: The church in a hostile culture
We should not think that it has ever been easy to be a Christian and to build the church. As we turn to the New Testament it is clear that the early church faced enormous persecution and enormous temptation to be shaped by their culture. In the west today we face the latter problem and increasingly will face the former. The book of 1 Corinthians is therefore extremely relevant. Here were a people who struggled with the temptation to imbibe their city's philosophy. They loved celebrity and what was showy. Yet Paul loved them and saw great potential in them. Beginning this autumn we plan to work through this book and seek to learn the lessons it brings to us. As we do so we will be better equipped to stand in our own generation.
